"Receiving the Bernie Meier Award for me has been the result of a two year journey of dedication and self commitment to achieve the final goal. I have found volunteer work to be very rewarding and meaningful: a valuable experience.
With benefits such as working with top chefs, developing new skills , strengths and gained exposure in the industry.
The award itself has given me self confidence to go after and obtain what I want, and peer recognition for my achievements resulting in a higher level of energy. A real sense of PRIDE."
Margaret Hulton, CCFCC 8244, Recipient 2010
From the moment that I became a member of the Muskoka & District Chef Association I felt an incredible sense of purpose and meaning for the task that was before me. I was a mature student taking a leap of faith, leaving a dead- end, full- time job in retail, to pursue a dream to learn to cook and bake for the public.
The passion I have felt all my life found an outlet in the volunteer work provided through the Association. You have opened doors to allow me to grow and learn through the interactions with members of the MDCA and the CCFCC. This has provided me with the confidence and tools to stride forward into the industry with the confidence required to succeed.
The Bernie Meier CCC Bursary that I received was the catalyst that propelled me forward to apply for and receive a position as one of the ten Junior Chefs chosen from across Canada to participate in the Right Some Good 10 Day Foodie Adventure held in Cape Breton, N.S. in August and September, 2011. This was an opportunity of a lifetime for which I will always be grateful. It came at a great cost to me personally, as my father passed away while I was in Cape Breton at about the same time that we were completing service of the event I was there to be part of. I know he wanted me to go and I like to think that he was there, cheering me on, to reach my goals much as I feel that the MDCA has been there for me.
Thank you so much for your support and I hope to be as much of an influence on new members for many years to come!
Robin Hutt, Recipient 2011

"Associations are more about what you can offer than what you can get. It’s hard to measure the value of camaraderie and support, of networking and associating with others in the same field. But a lot of chefs work in one place, and don’t have the luxury of getting out and around. Belonging to the CCFCC is a way to “get around” by utilizing . . . and contacting fellow members. The same way that we practice our cooking every day to stay in top form, to learn, to improve, we have to practice being contributing members to our association—that’s the only way we can make it work for us."
